DAVE CHERRY’s move to Rugby Club Vannes has been announced by the French club, with the Scotland international hooker having agreed terms on a two-year contract starting this summer.

The 33-year-0ld’s departure from Edinburgh at the end of the season was confirmed by the capital club earlier this [Thursday] morning, along with that of scrum-half Ali Price who has been linked to another French club, Montpellier.

Vannes currently prop up the French Top 14 with their record of six wins and one draw from 20 matches leaving them league points adrift of second-bottom Perpignan, and six league points behind third-bottom Stade Francais.

The club that finishes bottom of the Top 14 is automatically relegated to Pro D2 and is replaced by the Pro D2 champion. The second-from-bottom team then enters a promotion/relegation play-off with the Pro D2 runner-up and the winner of this game takes a place in the Top 14 for the next season.

“It’s a true honour to sign with Rugby Club Vannes,” said Cherry. “Playing in France, a country with such a rich rugby tradition, has been a dream of mine for a long time. After having the opportunity to play a match at Stade de la Rabine this season in the Challenge Cup, I’m looking forward to experiencing the incredible fan support that makes this club so special.

“France holds a very special place in my heart, not only because I met and married my wife there, but also because we are now raising our daughter in this beautiful country. We are delighted to embrace this culture and settle in this beautiful region of Brittany.”

Cherry has in fact played domestic club rugby in France before having spent the 2017-18 season with Scottish Rugby patnership club Stade Nicois.
