Princess Kate tends to keep her style demure and classically regal, but once in a while, she’ll surprise us with a striking color or bold accessory. Today, she did the latter, as she joined husband Prince William at Canterbury Cathedral while wearing a fabulous wide-brim hat.

The piece in question was a black-and-white houndstooth-inspired straw boater hat made British milliner Juliette Botterill. The design had sculptural sash detail and a brim so ample it almost entirely shaded Kate’s face. The Princess of Wales wore the hat to the side, perfectly styled to accompany her elaborate chignon bun.

Kate paired the accessory with a black-and-white houndstooth coat by British label Suzannah London. It was a sophisticated double-breasted piece with sharp shoulders and black lining. Two black buttons placed high at the waist held it together. The royal loves a statement outerwear moment, and in this case, she seemed to wear her coat over a flowy black midi dress, the skirt of which peeked out from underneath as she walked.

Pointy black patent-leather pumps (a diversion from her usual suede) completed the look. As for jewelry, Kate also went bold, choosing a pair of white-pearl cluster earrings—each shaped like a large flower. Around her neck, she wore a diamond-studded cross.

The princess wore the stunning ensemble to the installation of Dame Sarah Mullally as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury. Several other members of the royal family, as well as the prime minister, dignitaries, faith leaders, and school children, were among the more than 2,000 guests present during the historic service, which saw Mullally—who worked as a nurse before becoming ordained—become the first woman to be appointed leader of the Church of England.
