The U.S. Department of Agriculture launched a nationwide campaign to promote a new “Product of USA” label for meat, poultry, and eggs.

The voluntary label, effective January 1, is only for products from animals that were born, raised, slaughtered, and processed entirely in the United States.

USDA officials say this change closes a loophole that let some imported products use a U.S. label after only minor domestic processing.

The department says the new standard gives consumers clearer information about where their food comes from and helps American farmers and ranchers compete more fairly.

The campaign comes as the number of family farms falls and the U.S. cattle herd is at a 75-year low.
