With the extended bank holiday weekend approaching and brighter weather ahead, it’s the perfect time to enjoy a walk in the breathtaking Lake District. Head just past the famous Ashness Bridge and take the path up the hill on the right-hand side of the road, where you’ll arrive at a remarkable viewpoint called Surprise View.
Set high on a cliff surrounded by oak trees, this location delivers a wide, panoramic outlook over Derwentwater, stretching all the way to Bassenthwaite.
The entire family can enjoy this scenic three-mile walk that takes in Ashness Bridge, Surprise View, and the picturesque Lodore Falls. And for those keen for a well-earned rest post-wander, there lies a warm invitation at The Swinside Inn, reports LancsLive.

This welcoming, dog-friendly pub set against the backdrop of Newlands Valley is perfect for walkers, climbers, canoeists or just lovers of the Lakeside drive. For further detail, The Swinside Inn’s website describes its allure: “Here you can enjoy a cold drink in the sun (or shade), take in the views and enjoy a special outdoor menu with a number of favourites cooked to an excellent standard.”
The pub received a full refurbishment both inside and out, with a full renovation of the rooms and beer garden to welcome its new owners.
Don’t forget when you’re out and about to make sure you’re prepared for every scenario: Commence your trek up the road until you spot the enticing Surprise View on the right. The view across Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite towards Skiddaw is enough to take your breath away.
Continue your journey along the road for about 300 metres and you’ll spot an unmarked footpath to your right. Follow this path all the way down, but be mindful as it can be steep in certain areas.

Eventually, the path veers left and leads you to the stunning Lodore Falls. Feel free to take a break at any of the pubs en route or continue on the roadside path until you reach Kettlewell car park across the road.
From here, follow the path skirting the water’s edge until you come upon the Watendlath road on your right (opposite the jetty). Stick to this road, which almost doubles back on itself, and make your way uphill back to your vehicle at Ashness Bridge.
