For Pub of the Week, we take a visit to one of the Manchester’s most recognisable pubs

There’s a pub in the city centre which, quite possibly, can be viewed from space due to its massive illuminated wall of lights on the front outside which are pretty much there all throughout the year.
In part thanks to its twinkly glamour, The Deansgate pub has built up a firm reputation as a cosy, reliable and friendly pub – but it’s not always gone by that name. In fact, the venue started life way back in the mid-19th century as The Crown Inn and was a frequent spot for the many industrial workers on the Castlefield canal system.
Nowadays, the venue, which sits below the Deansgate-Castlefield train and tram lines, is filled with city centre workers and residents, with its regular line-up of events particularly good at luring people in, including its Wednesday night smartphone quiz.

The pub has been operated by Greene King since 2022 who gave the venue a full revamp after it had closed at the start of the pandemic and not reopened for two years. The three-floor venue features two function rooms and even a rooftop terrace which offers stunning views of the city skyline in the summer.
The Deansgate – which boasts green and cream tiles set against the distinctive red brick – is today run by general manager Tara Wearing, who has spoken to us for the latest instalment of our regular Pub of The Week feature. We’ve found out what makes the venue so special, a bit more about its history and the spirit of working in the city centre.

How did you get into the pub industry in the first place?
I actually grew up in the industry – my mum ran pubs when I was younger. From an early age I was surrounded by that lively, community atmosphere that only a pub can create.
When I turned 17 and was looking for my very first job, it felt only natural that I stepped behind the bar myself. As it happens, that pub was a Greene King site, so, in many ways, it feels like I’ve come full circle. I’ve worked in hospitality ever since, and I can’t imagine doing anything else!
What is the significance behind the pub’s history and name?
The Deansgate is named after the historic mile-long road it sits on at the heart of Manchester’s city centre. The pub was established in the 19th century and has been serving customers for well over 200 years.
Even though the name itself is straightforward, the pub’s longevity and its place in the heart of the community give it a real sense of heritage, and I’m proud to be part of its current chapter.
What’s your best-selling drink?
Guinness is a hugely popular option amongst locals and tourists alike, and nothing beats settling into a cosy nook with a perfectly poured pint in hand.
We also have a great selection of cask ales on the bar including Abbot Ale and Greene King Level Head Session IPA, and we regularly change up our guest ales so there’s always something new to try.

What is it about your local community that you love?
The spirit of Manchester is honestly unmatched, and the people we get through the doors are passionate and full of character, whether they’re locals popping in after work or visitors wanting to experience the city’s culture.
I love that you can have a pub full of people from completely different walks of life, yet everyone feels at home. The Mancunian sense of pride and togetherness is something really special.
Have there been any spooky or haunted encounters in the pub?
Not that I’ve experienced! The building has a long history so I’m sure there have been some fantastic encounters over the years, but as far as I’m aware there are no ghostly visits to report at the Deansgate just yet.

How can people support their local pub?
There are so many small but meaningful ways people can support their local, whether they’re looking to stop by for a midweek drink or booking in for a meal, recommending us to friends or leaving a kind review.
People really are at the heart of what we do, and more than anything it’s about keeping that connection alive. Pubs are pillars of their communities, places where people come together, celebrate, and feel part of something.
