Living somewhere rural with no neighbors around can be a great way to reconnect with nature, but having friendly neighbors nearby can also be a great pick-me-up. After all, a genuine wave and smile can turn someone’s entire morning around! It doesn’t take a grand gesture to be a thoughtful neighbor, whether you’re a human or an animal.

On March 27, Boca Raton resident @thelaragould witnessed an unexpected moment between two neighbors when an armadillo sauntered by the neighborhood cat. Lara didn’t know what to expect, but she was pleasantly surprised by the animals’ neighborly encounter. The armadillo didn’t look twice at their furry friend, but the cat didn’t know what to think!

How cute! This isn’t something a person sees every day, and, judging by the cat’s shocked expression, it’s not something felines see, either. Armadillos must be masters at hiding! Still, some commenters aren’t so convinced.

“They have to know each other, or the armadillo has legitimately no survival skills,” one viewer commented. Perhaps the answer is both! The armored armadillo seemed more than comfortable around their feline friend, but the cat looked too confused for someone who’s seen an armadillo before.

Commenters like @carrienco aren’t the only ones who’d “never seen [an armadillo] outside the zoo.” No wonder it’s so exciting! This armadillo was definitely bigger than I’d imagined, but it’s always possible this fluffy cat is small, too.

Armadillos in Florida

When most people think of armadillos, they picture hot, dry places like New Mexico. True, some armadillos call the desert home, but many others prefer humid, tropical climates like those in Florida. Their territory had expanded a lot since they began to thrive!

Because these animals like to dig, they often sneak into flower beds and gardens. They may wreak havoc on crops and flowers, but giving them a cool and protected home is so worth it. If you’re lucky, you just might glimpse little moments of their lives, just like in this! video
