While most will flock to Crosby and Formby beaches during the bank holidays, Thurstaston remains a lesser-known treasure, cherished mainly by Wirral locals. Set along the Dee Estuary, this scenic spot offers sweeping views across to Wales and the Clwydian Hills – panoramas that truly stand out from the rest.
The beach is a mix of sand and shingle beneath striking clay cliffs that feels refreshingly untouched free from crowds and commercial distractions. On brighter days, you might spot members of the Dee Sailing Club gliding across the water – or even join them if you have your own boat.
For those staying ashore, it’s a perfect place to unwind with a picnic, barbecue, or a good book. Although swimming isn’t advised here, nearby West Kirby beach provides a safer alternative with a lifeguard and tidal bathing pool. Even so, Thurstaston offers plenty to enjoy without getting in the water.
Just beside the beach lies Wirral Country Park, a Green Flag-awarded space filled with woodland and picnic areas. For refreshments, Benty Farm Tearooms is just a short walk away and a great stop for coffee or a light bite.

The tearoom has soared in popularity, attracting visitors from across Merseyside and beyond. The afternoon tea includes a variety of finger sandwiches, a freshly-baked scone, a small pot of jam, Cheshire clotted cream and a selection of three homemade small cakes and patisseries.
When you’re ready to stretch your legs, the Wirral Way offers a peaceful 12-mile walking route along a former railway line. Though it closed in the 1960s, the path remains popular thanks to its stunning views over the Dee Estuary to Wales. The route runs alongside the Dee before heading inland to Hooton.

For even more impressive scenery, Thurstaston Common rewards those willing to tackle its steep paths with panoramic views of both coast and countryside. On clear days, you can spot the Liverpool skyline or even Blackpool Tower in the distance with a keen eye.
