Ladies, it’s time to lighten your locks. The temperatures are rising, and your hair color should reflect a summer state of mind: warm, sunny, and free. Stars like Katie Holmes are already ahead of the curve, ushering in what’s shaping up to be the hue of the season—bronde.
Holmes, who’s been gradually going lighter since the end of winter, debuted her brightest strands yet on Instagram earlier this week. She showed off the new look at a soirée celebrating season 2 of Poker Face, with her hair—usually a rich brunette—now streaked with caramel highlights, especially around her face. The sun-kissed color gave her complexion a noticeable glow and paired perfectly with her floral suit and coffee-colored fringe handbag.

The Dawson’s Creek alum isn’t the only celebrity trading depth for dimension. Last month, Princess Kate, a.k.a. Kate Middleton, stepped out in Scotland with a noticeably brighter bronde makeover during a visit with Prince William.
Of course, bronde—a blend of blonde and brunette, for the uninitiated—isn’t exactly new. Khloé Kardashian and Hailey Bieber have been loyal fans of the in-between shade for years. Jennifer Lopez, Lily Aldridge, Chrissy Teigen, and Jessica Alba have also long embraced the look.

So, why is it such a go-to? Bronde is flattering, versatile, and best of all—low maintenance. Its natural gradation makes root regrowth less noticeable, meaning fewer trips to the salon. Plus, there are levels to it: honey bronde (warm and rich), golden bronde (a touch lighter), and ashy bronde (with cool, platinum-gray undertones).
