Ghana sacked their manager after four consecutive friendly defeats and are now giving themselves the best chance of performing at the World Cup by appointing a high‑profile coach

Ghana are closing in on appointing former World Cup‑winning manager Joachim Low ahead of this summer’s tournament where they will face England. Reports in Ghana suggest the 66‑year‑old is expected to sign a short‑term deal focused on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to GbcGhana, the ‘last 24 hours’ of negotiations have been intense, but personal terms are close to being finalised. Low is reportedly set to earn ‘€150,000 (£131,000) per month’ under the agreement.
Ghana dismissed Otto Addo last week after four consecutive defeats left the Black Stars ranked 74th in the world. In a statement, the Ghana Football Association said: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team, the Black Stars, Otto Addo, with immediate effect.
“The association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours. The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”
While the Ghana FA have made no public comment on a successor, reports indicate that Low is set to take charge for this summer’s tournament. The German coach, who led his country between 2006 and 2021, famously guided them to World Cup glory in 2014 after securing a third‑place finish at the 2010 edition in South Africa.

Low has been out of management since 2021 but has admitted receiving ‘several offers’ to return to coaching over the past few years.
Speaking to Kicker last year, he said: “I wasn’t really interested in returning. However, now I’m ready to consider opportunities that leave a good impression. I have extensive experience with national teams and preparing for major tournaments.”
He also admitted he should have left the Germany job three years earlier. He said: “I should have stepped aside after the 2018 World Cup to make way for someone with fresh ideas who could better manage the transition from the ‘golden’ generation.”
Ghana are in Group L where they will face England, Croatia, and Panama. Their opening game will be against Panama on June 18 before the showdown against Thomas Tuchel’s side on June 23.
