One of Edinburgh’s most well-known shopping centres is Ocean Terminal, which is found along the shore in the Leith area of the city. Originally opened in 2001, it was built on former industrial docklands and is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, cafés, and a 12-screen Vue cinema.
While it remains open to this day, Ocean Terminal is undoubtedly not as popular as it once was back when it first opened its doors. Originally among the most exciting shopping destinations in Edinburgh at the start of the new millennium, its shine has slowly faded throughout the years.
Those who have visited Ocean Terminal recently may be stunned to learn that it once hosted an awards ceremony attended by some of the biggest names in music. On November 6, 2003, the MTV Europe Music Awards were held in Western Harbour in Edinburgh, with an arena constructed specially for the event outside the shopping centre.

The MTV Europe Music Awards take place each year in a different European city, and honour the top artists and music in popular culture. At the height of their popularity, the awards brought together the most well-known musicians and celebrities in the world—and the 2003 event in Edinburgh was no exception.
Among the A-listers that walked the red carpet and were in attendance at the ceremony were Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, Kylie Minogue, Missy Elliott, The Black Eyed Peas, Justin Timberlake, André 3000, Ludacris, Pink, and a kilt-wearing Vin Diesel. Meanwhile, the awards were hosted by iconic singer, songwriter, and actress Christina Aguilera.

Unsurprisingly, Scottish music fans lined the streets of Edinburgh hoping to get their hands on tickets for the awards. Some were even given tickets as part of an audition process for ‘screamers’, with the 500 loudest music fans chosen at Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens.
A select few lucky students in Edinburgh had already secured tickets by this point, albeit in an unusual manner. Televised award shows like the Europe Music Awards often hire ‘seat fillers’ to take place of celebrities when they duck out for a drink or head to the toilet to ensure that the audience always looks full for the cameras.
As reported by BBC News, Aguilera revealed during the ceremony that she had been complimented by a local Scotsman. She stated: “He said I was a radge wee midden. Which I am told means a sexy little lady, so I will take it like that.”

As with most award shows, there were also lots of performances for the audience and those watching at home to enjoy. Beyoncé and Sean Paul sang ‘Baby Boy’, Dido performed ‘White Flag’, and Justin Timberlake joined The Black Eyes Peas for ‘Where Is the Love?’, while host Christina Aguilera performed her hit ‘Dirrty’.
The biggest winner of the night was Justin Timberlake, who won three of his five nominations, taking home gongs for Best Male, Best Pop, and Best Album for ‘Justified’. Elsewhere, Best Song went to Beyoncé and Jay-Z for ‘Crazy in Love’, Best Female was awarded to Christina Aguilera, and the award for Best Hip-Hop was given to Eminem.
At the time, Timberlake stated: “I’ve tried haggis, I’ve tried black pudding—and I loved them both. I always try and sample the culture of all the new places I visit and this has certainly been memorable. Scotland is a beautiful, beautiful country and the people are so nice, it’s been amazing.”

As if the novelty of the MTV Europe Music Awards being held in Leith wasn’t enough, the ceremony itself wasn’t without its drama. This started early on in the night, when Aguilera reportedly refused to walk on the red carpet if Kelly Osbourne was there—with the latter responding by describing the singer’s music as “crap” and calling her “a cow.”
Meanwhile, as part of Scottish band Travis’ performance of ‘The Beautiful Occupation’, a group of nude protesters marched onstage with signs that covered their private areas before lifting them at the end of the song. There were also major technical issues during Beyoncé and Sean Paul’s performance that meant the duo had to start over.
Overall, it is thought that the 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards brought £4 million into Edinburgh’s local economy and helped promote the city as a top tourist destination to a global audience. It also made for one of the city’s most memorable nights in terms of popular culture.
Walking around Ocean Terminal today, it is hard to imagine that it was once the scene of all this culture and drama. The shopping centre is currently undergoing a redevelopment after being put on the market in 2025, so there is hope that it will once again return to its former glory—though don’t get your hopes up about seeing Beyoncé there anytime soon.
