A man has been taken to hospital following an alleged assault which led to a heavy police presence in a Welsh town. Officers from Dyfed-Powys Police were called to reports of an assault in Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire at around 1.45pm on Friday (May 9).

A witness told WalesOnline that armed police were spotted at the scene. Dyfed-Powys Police have been asked to confirm whether armed officers responded to the incident. The main road through the town, the A475, was closed following the alleged assault.

Police have said they will remain in the town while enquiries into the incident continue.

Dyfed-Powys Police said that there is “no threat to members of the public”.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of an assault in the Newcastle Emlyn area at around 1.45pm today (May 9).

“One man was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening. The road was closed for a short time and reopened just before 4pm.

“There is no threat to members of the public and officers will remain in the local area while enquiries continue. Thank you to local residents for their patience.”
