Birmingham City old boy Barry Ferguson admits he is in a “sticky situation” at Rangers with no update on his future and that of the Gers’ out-of-contract players.
The Blues favourite and former Gers captain was installed as Ibrox boss in February until the end of the season, but amid an impending takeover by an American consortium of Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, he has yet to be told if he will keep his job.
Ferguson, now 47, says he has had “nothing whatsoever” in terms of feedback about his future, but is “not going to go and cry in a corner”. He added: “I’ve just got to concentrate on making sure I prepare my team as best as I can.
“There’s obviously a number of players running out of contract. And you’ve got to be very frank and respectful in the fact that these guys obviously want to know the situation going forward.
“But in terms of the guys that are running out of contract, no, I’ve not had any involvement in terms of what I would do. And what obviously the players are thinking of doing. So it’s a bit of a sticky situation if I’m being honest with you.
“I’ve said my piece on it. There needs to be a decision as quickly as possible. So we just need to wait and see.”
Ferguson has won only four of his 12 matches in charge – and none at Ibrox – and he wants that record improved against Aberdeen in Govan on Sunday, especially after last week’s 1-1 draw with old foes Celtic.
He spent two years at Blues under Alex McLeish between 2009 and 2011, making 84 appearances before leaving in the wake of relegation to the Championship.
Ferguson will always have a place in the hearts of Blues fans after his role in beating Arsenal in the 2011 League Cup final, despite playing the last hour of the showpiece at Wembley with a broken rib.
He recently commented on the club’s bright hopes for the future, telling gaming site gambling.com: “They spent an absolute fortune during the summer. So they’ll go back into the Championship and they’ll keep progressing, and then get back into the Premier League sooner rather than later.
“I’ve watched them a few times, they’ve been on Sky, and I’ve been really impressed by them. So certainly with the money that has been spent, I think the Birmingham fans were expecting them to get promoted this year.
“It looks to me as if the owners are putting their money where their mouth is. They’re certainly investing in the team and they’re investing into the stadium as well. I’ve seen that when I was down in pre-season. In and around the stadium there’s money being spent.
“It’s good to see because sometimes when you get that investment, they don’t really put money into certain areas of the club, but it looks to me if the American investors are willing to put it into all of the different areas.”
