It’s been a fixture of Chorlton life for 65 years, and now Wilmslow gets to enjoy the bagels, buns and bread of Barbakan

Chorlton’s long-standing delicatessen and bakery Barbakan has opened its second store in Wilmslow – amid constant pleas from hungry punters in the Cheshire town.

The family-run business, a fixture of Chorlton life for the past 65 years, is spreading its wings for the first time with its second outpost. It opened its doors early on Friday morning on Moor Lane in Wilmslow – and the crowds were soon flocking in.

Indeed, cinnamon buns had already sold out by 10am amid big queues of hungry locals through the doors.

The new deli and cafe is a smaller outpost than the Chorlton original, but fans of Barbakan can expect all of its mouth-watering bakes. That includes a daily roster of its famed giant fresh baked bagels in a variety of flavours, sourdough loaves, Irish soda breads, poppy seed cakes, scones, croissants and loaf cakes.

There’s also a curated counter of fresh cheeses and meats that are being brought in daily from the Chorlton HQ to Wilmslow. And every day after 11.30am shoppers will be able to get hold of the famed Barbakan Sizzlers – fully loaded ciabatta sandwiches that are griddled and served hot.

There’s a small sit-in area inside the new deli, so you can choose to either sit in or takeaway your goodies. There’s also cabinets with a selection of deli classics like sauces, pastas and condiments.

The opening of the shop has long been on the mind of owner Frankie, indeed ever since she moved to the area ten years ago.

Frankie said: “This is something that has been in my head for about ten years, but at the end of January I finally thought right I’m going to do it. I saw this empty unit round the corner from me, and I just went ahead and signed up for it and here we are now.

“Chorlton remains our hub, and so this shop will be fed from Chorlton as it is a much smaller site.

“It’s a mini version of Barbakan but everything will be delivered fresh each day, from the pre-sliced cheese, meats, bread and pastries.”

There are also pastry and coffee deals, and you can have toasted bagels and teacakes to order too as well as fresh coffees and other hot and cold drinks.

Frankie added: “We have a bit of indoor seating, and hopefully a bit of outdoor seating too soon, it’s very much a European bistro style.”

The outside of the building has all been painted black, although signs hadn’t quite arrived in time for opening day. But inside is all ready, with a monochrome floor and a stylish mix of black and red colours.

As a mum in the area, Frankie has already built up quite the following for her baked goods and so is hoping for the support of the local community in the new venture.

She said: “When I moved into Wilmslow, I used my Barbakan van to move in with – and straight away I made friends on my road! People immediately came over and said ‘oh please tell us you’re opening a Barbakan here’.

“My kids go to the local primary school so over the years I’ve been really involved in sports day stalls, Christmas stalls, any time they need nice treats it’s been Barbakan so I already know a lot of parents in the area. We sponsor Wilmslow Town Football Club too, Barbakan is on their shirts.

“People have been asking for a while now, ‘when are you going to open one in Wilmslow’ and there was just something about this year, I thought just do it, it’s time.”

She certainly had that support on opening day – with cinnamon buns flying out the door. “We got mobbed this morning,” she laughed. “It’s been great to get so much support.”

The new Barbakan deli is at 1 Moor Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire and will open Tuesday – Saturday and is closed Sundays and Mondays. Opening times are Tuesday to Friday 7am to 4.30pm and Saturdays 8am to 4pm.
