More than 30 artists gather in The Crypt Gallery’s underground chambers for an immersive exhibition shaped by the afterlife of the pandemic and the legacy of Katya Kan.

Down the Rabbit Hole is a group exhibition presented by Katya’s Space CIC at The Crypt Gallery in London, unfolding through the venue’s vaulted underground chambers and maze-like tunnels. Bringing together more than 30 artists from London and abroad, the exhibition considers the psychological and emotional terrain shaped by the Covid-19 era, with works that address solitude, dislocation and transformation.
At its heart is the work of Katya Kan (1987–2023), represented by the watercolour Spacetime, an image of Iceland’s Diamond Cave pierced by her recurring bunny alter ego. The painting is playful, uncanny and quietly disquieting. Its rabbit figure peers out from a crystalline passage stretching towards infinity, turning the cave into a metaphor for confinement, where the light at the far end suggests not escape but the suspended stillness of time itself. Through this exhibition, Katya’s Space continues its commitment to the legacy of the late artist by supporting the next generation of artists and filmmakers.

Curated by Amie Conway with Galia Velimukhametova, Director of Katya’s Space CIC, Down the Rabbit Hole spans a wide range of media, including site-specific immersive installation, painting, works on paper, photography, sculpture, film, music and performance. The setting is integral to the experience. Visitors move through the exhibition with a mix of curiosity and unease, guided at the entrance by artist Jig Cochrane’s JIGANTICS, a series of giant illuminated flower sculptures that usher audiences into the subterranean world below.
The exhibiting artists include Aliki Karveli (Greece, London), Ananda Kuhn (Brazil, Italy), Aurelie Freoua (France, London), Cate Lis, Ed Mirza, Ela Hsu, Gabrielle Hawkins, Haohao Zhang (China), Isabel Paget, Lauren Baker (London), Leila Anderson (Kazakhstan), Leyla Ustenkaya (Turkey, Bosnia, France), Maham Suhail, Marcia Scott, Marina Smith / Diana Anastasia, mORGANICo, Roza Horowitz (Holland), Sophi Gardner, Vaidehi Bhargava and Zorica Purlija (Montenegro, Australia). Artworks will be available for sale, with all profits going directly to the artists and to future programming.
Quoting Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland: “It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then,” the exhibition frames its descent as both physical and psychological. The title gestures towards the unknown while asking how the pandemic continues to shape our sense of time, isolation and social connection. Across immersive installations, light sculpture, site-specific projection and other forms, the exhibition traces thresholds, mythic passageways, and the inner landscapes of memory and change.

Among the notable works are Gianinna Delpino’s dream-like paintings on migration and origin; Yuliya V Krylova’s Butoh-inspired performance and painting, which examine creativity as a form of healing; Iona Scott’s plankton-inspired light sculptures, attuned to what is almost imperceptible; Thomas Robertson-Johnson’s Möbius hourglass structure, a meditation on cyclical time; Aurelie Freoua’s mixed-media reflections on memory; Ananda Kuhn’s surreal interior-geological landscapes; and Lauren Baker’s installation Five Regrets – Five Truths, which fills a crypt chamber with existential and cosmic reflection.
Human beings have always confronted thresholds they cannot fully see beyond. The pandemic was one such rupture, interrupting ordinary life and prompting new forms of introspection, myth-making and symbolic storytelling. Down the Rabbit Hole gives that shared experience a visual language, inviting visitors into an underworld of reflection, creativity and transformation.
