Carlos Vicente was Player of the Match in Birmingham City’s win over Wrexham
Carlos Vicente is showing his worth in the Championship after taking a while to get his feet under the table at Birmingham City.
That was the verdict of Chris Davies after his £7million winger ran riot in Sunday’s showdown with Wrexham at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.
Vicente notched his first goal at his new home with a well-placed header early in the second half before Blues skipper Christoph Klarer made the points safe.
The Spaniard has now scored in back-to-back games and has three goals since swapping La Liga for the Championship in January.

“He was excellent,” said Davies. “He had a big job on his hands up and down the line with the wing-back, which I was trusting him to do – he’s really diligent and works hard – then as a winger, I love to see them scoring at the back post.
“That’s where all your goals are. You just say it over and over, ‘Arrive at the back post, arrive at the back post…’ whether it’s a volley or a tap-in, but with the head, even better.
“He is showing his adaptation to this league. This league can make a really good player look really ordinary – that’s one thing I have seen this season.
“But he’s showing that he’s adapting from Spain to England and the Championship.”
Vicente is part of a new-look front four that is getting Blues supporters off their seats.
August Priske is acting as the focal point with Vicente, Jay Stansfield and Ibrahim Osman buzzing around behind him.
The presence of 6ft 4in striker Priske and the athleticism of those around him has allowed Blues to play a more direct style in recent games.
Davies commented: “In the last few games we’ve definitely found a way to get forward quicker, to get more box threat in games, and if it opens a little bit we’ve played.
“You can only really do it if you’ve got an actual presence and someone with physicality. With August, you’re not going to win every single header but he’s really neat and tidy around the second balls with both feet and his touch.
“He’s growing game by game in his confidence and today will be big for him.
“I’ve liked the way we’ve played forward more to be perfectly honest, rather than recycling and playing around too much, which started to become more ineffective for us. We just have to be a good team and play good football – and that’s effective football.”
