Rutherglen MP Michael Shanks has urged locals to take part in a survey he has launched on the UK Government’s consultation on a potential ban of social media for under-16s.
The proposal is examining how these platforms affect children’s wellbeing – and their relationship with their phones.
Alongside the government consultation, Mr Shanks has unveiled his own survey to hear directly from residents about their views on this issue.

The survey aims to give everyone in the community a chance to contribute towards the discussion, helping to shape an approach that protects children and supports safe, positive use of technology.
Me Shanks said: “Social media has the potential to be an amazing tool but it has also become more of a risk for young people in recent years, and we must ensure it enriches young people’s lives, not harms them.
“That’s why I’ve launched this survey across the constituency, to find out if people would support banning social media for under 16 year olds and the impact it might have on children’s wellbeing.

“As a former secondary school teacher, I’m very aware of the challenges posed as technology rapidly develops.
“It’s important to strike a balance and that’s why I want to hear from as many people as possible – young people and parents/carers to help deliver the best policy.”
