Two heavyweights of the European game wface off against each other tonight as Paris Saint-Germain take on Liverpool in the Champions League. The French champions go into the game at Anfield as heavy favourites as they hold a 2 – 0 lead from the first leg and the travelling contingent are in a confident mood.

Three thousand PSG fans have made the journey to Merseyside as they prepare to roar their team over the line into the semi final of Europe’s elite competition. There was a buzz around the city centre today ahead of the match as fans enjoyed the sights and sounds of the city before heading to the game later this evening for the 8pm kick off.

It was Fischer Theo’s first time in Liverpool and the city exceeded his expectations. The 20-year-old from Strasbourg was on his way to the Albert Dock when he spoke to the ECHO and was impressed by his first experience of Liverpool.

He said: “I thought it was like Manchester so nothing to do, but it’s prettier. I like it. Even the football team is better than Manchester.” European nights at Anfield are part of football folklore and Fischer couldn’t wait to see if it lived up to expectation.

He said: “I hear that You’ll Never Walk Alone is one of the best songs of all time so I’m excited to have the chance to witness that and I think it’s going to be a great game.”

Another PSG fan Simon Boutonnet shared similar sentiments, but was clear on where his allegiances will always lie. He told the ECHO: “I cannot wait to hear You’ll Never Walk Alone. It’s really famous in the world, but for sure I will support Paris because they are my team.”

The 26-year-old from Toulouse had been shopping at the Liverpool FC store in Williamson Square and was keen to hear more from the fans in the city during his stay. He said: “I like to meet Liverpool fans and have a chat together. It’s a good moment to share together as fans.”

The communal experience of football is what makes the game so special and another fan Sagawai Black is getting to experience that for the first time tonight. The PSG fan told the ECHO on Bold Street: “Today is a special day for me. It’s my first ever game where I’m going to watch them in person so that’s going to be a big moment for me.

“Especially going to Anfield, which is an historic stadium for all football fans. I’m also looking forward to see how it is to be around Liverpool fans. Also being with PSG fans. Very excited.”

The 27-year-old from Montpellier couldn’t wait to experience the Anfield atmosphere, but didn’t want it to be too powerful to change the tide of the tie.

He said: “I’ve heard only good things about the European nights at Anfield. But I’m also a bit sceptical because we hope to go out with a victory tonight.”

Sagawai now lives in Birmingham and is eager to see more than just the football during his first stay in Liverpool. He said: “It’s a very nice city. Globally, the architecture, I really like it. It’s very nice. I didn’t really get the chance to explore the whole areas just yet but I’ve seen some very nice cathedrals around. After the football, I will make sure to visit.

“The atmosphere is pretty calm at the moment. After the football games, I will make I visit these places. The atmosphere is pretty calm at the moment. I’m assuming everyone is working, but I’m looking forward to the ambience and to see how everything is.”

Liverpool culture is famous around the world and another fan Etienne Chaminade told the ECHO he could feel the magnitude of his environment during his first visit. He said: “We feel a part of history. Nice city, nice weather and nice town.”

And the fans are confident the PSG will oversee any fight from Liverpool as they expect Luis Enrique’s side to end the Reds dreams of European glory tonight. Fischer said: “I think that we haven’t scored enough goals for the home game and there is still a chance that Liverpool will win. It’s a great stadium with great fans so I think it’s going to be a tough game, but I’m very confident. I think it will finish 2 – 2.”
