Sir Nick Faldo has hit back at Greg Norman’s accusations that he made “nasty” remarks about his role with LIV Golf. The six-time major winner had vowed to hold off on his response out of respect for the ongoing Masters.
As Rory McIlroy was handed his green jacket for the second consecutive year on Sunday at Augusta National, he entered the exclusive club of just four golfers to have won the tournament in successive years.
That elite group includes Faldo, who triumphed in Georgia in both 1989 and 1990 before securing a third crown in 1996. Yet Faldo, who was working as a pundit for Sky Sports last week, found himself at the centre of some unpleasant accusations ahead of this year’s competition.
Australian legend Norman, who battled Faldo on the course during the 1990s and came second to him at Augusta in 1996, launched his attack at the beginning of April.

Ex-LIV chief executive Norman labelled Faldo as “entitled” and “nasty” and the English legend has now made good on his word, delivering a measured and well-crafted reply.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Norman said: “Nick said some things about me during my time at LIV, some really nasty things. I don’t have any respect for someone who gives their opinion on something in that sort of manner when they don’t know both sides.
“Come on, we have a history, he could have called me and asked for the other side of the story, and I’d have gladly given it. And if he still hadn’t agreed then fine – his opinion and as he knows the facts, he would have been entitled to say anything he likes. Happy days. But just to sound off? Like I said, no respect for him.”
The management company representing Faldo has issued a comprehensive document responding to these claims, which includes screenshots of text message exchanges he had with Norman in December 2020 and November 2022.
The documents reveal that Faldo reportedly invited Norman onto his programme to discuss LIV and broader golfing matters, but this was apparently turned down.

A purported text exchange from 2020 in which Faldo sent his best wishes to Norman following his hospitalisation with COVID was also included.
The messages concerning a possible interview with Norman seem to demonstrate Faldo assuring him that the programme wouldn’t focus solely on LIV and that he had no intention of ambushing his old rival, merely wanting him to share his views.
Faldo’s statement concluded: “Given the passage of time and the changes that have since taken place within the game of golf, Sir Nick does not consider that discussion a relevant one to reopen. Accordingly, no further comment will be made.”
