A man has been rescued from a house fire in Downpatrick as crews continue to monitor a wildfire in Co Tyrone.

An update from the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service on Saturday afternoon said that regional control staff provided “fire survival guidance” to a man trapped on the first floor of the property.

The blaze had started in the garage filling property with smoke, with crews responding from Downpatrick Comber and Ballynahinch.

A NIFRS spokesperson added: “A member of the public acted quickly and managed to get the man out of the property with a ladder.

“The fire is believed to be accidental.”

Following the outbreak of “extensive wildfires” in the Clogher area of Co Tyrone on Friday, two appliances remained at the Ballagh Road area on Saturday.

“The temperature reduced overnight which has helped the situation. Crews will continue to review the area over the next few days,” the spokesperson said.

“We are asking the public to remain vigilant to fires in the countryside, as the dry weather continues.

“If they see fire please dial 999 to ensure NIFRS are aware of the fire.”

Earlier the Environment Minister Andrew Muir issued a warning to the public against wildfires, warning that carelessness could cost lives.
