East Kilbride residents are being urged to state their objections to an “appropriation” of land at the centre of a housing row in the town.

The council has confirmed residents now have until May 6 to lodge objections to its proposal to “appropriate the use of open space land at Westwood Hill” for an affordable housing development of 99 homes.

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council said: “In accordance with legislation, notice was published that the council intends to appropriate the use of open space land in Westwood Hill for a proposed new affordable housing development. Any responses received by the council in relation to the notice will be considered as part of the overall development proposals.”

“A key aspect of the design will be to maximise the greenspace available to all, whilst assisting to meet significant need for new council homes in this area of East Kilbride.

“The council await the full outcomes of the site investigations completed earlier this year in relation to suitability of the land for development, which will inform any significant constraints on the proposed development area.”

The land has been identified as “priority green space” within South Lanarkshire’s current Local Development Plan, but has been included in its latest Strategic Housing Investment Plan ( SHIP) as a potential site for new council homes.
