Champion Jockey Sean Bowen is an interesting booking for Gary & Josh Moore’s BOHEMIAN BREEZE, a fair performer on the Flat who ran with promise on his hurdles debut here last month when third behind Public Enemy. He gets the vote in the opener. Hurdling newcomer Machete Beach may provide the chief threat, particularly if the market speaks in his favour, as he won twice from four starts on the Flat last year, whilst Ask Peter is also of interest.
Diana Grissell’s recent course-and-distance winner WESTTARA remains feasibly treated and may be able to follow up that success when the outsider of five but taking advantage of a much reduced mark to win under Rules for the first time. Proper Twelve has returned to form of late, finishing second at Bangor last time, and should appreciate the step back up in trip, while I’m Your Buckaroo, third at Fontwell last time, is another who heads the list of dangers.
A four-runner field that consists of two recent bleeders and couple of out of form sorts, but at least Evan Williams’ WALKINTHEWOODS has proved he’s capable off this sort of mark. A dual winner over hurdles in the past, Walkinthewoods’ last two starts need overlooking but he should have won at Ffos Las in February when finishing strongly to be beaten a short head under an inexperienced claimer. A repeat of that form would be good enough here.
Some of these are having their first start after a change of trainer, most notably PRINCE QUATTRO who can become yet another to benefit from the switch to James Owen. Formerly trained in Ireland by Philip Rothwell, he was successful last season at Limerick and Down Royal and shaped as if still in form on his last start in March. Goodwin Face is low mileage and might provide the main threat on the back of last month’s third over course and distance.
Last month’s course-and-distance winner HECOULDBETHEONE was far from disgraced when fifth in a stronger race at Warwick last time and James Owen’s top weight looks a sound player here operating from the same mark. Broderick seemed to find his stamina stretched at Exeter last time and can fare better here, while Don Rafael is another capable of giving the selection most to think about if bouncing back from a lesser effort last time.
This can go to a chasing debutant as point winner SMUGGLERS HAVEN has been progressing nicely over hurdles for Sara Bradstock, winning three of her last four starts, including one at Plumpton, so is taken to make a winning start over fences. Recent course-and-distance winner Sea Invasion has a visor on rather than the blinkers he worse last time and is next best ahead of Camino Rocio who won five times last season and could bounce back under Sean Bowen.
Anthony Honeyball looks to hold the key to this race, with October’s Stratford third QUEEN’S THEATRE preferred to stablemate Arfursgal who was a good second on her Newbury debut but needs to bounce back from a lesser run at Fontwell. Newcomers I’m A Believer and Le Flying Ferret, from the stables of Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies and Nick Gifford respectively, would also enter the reckoning if the betting speaks for them.
