Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has reportedly come to an agreement with a Premier League club ahead of the summer transfer window but it is not Manchester United.
Gyokeres has been heavily linked with a move to United since Ruben Amorim left Sporting to join the Reds back in November. Amorim was in charge when the centre-forward was unearthed at Coventry City and upon his switch to Portugal, the Swede has moved from strength to strength.
Ahead of tonight’s derby against Benfica, Gyokeres had scored a whopping 95 goals in just 99 appearances for the club. As the season has drawn on, there has been more and more talk about the striker leaving Sporting in the summer.
There has been suggestions that an agreement between Gyokeres and Sporting is in place to allow the forward to leave for less than his estimated £85m release clause. This is thought to be a gesture of good will from the club after all the striker has done.
According to Correio da Manhã, it is Arsenal who are the first club preparing to test Sporting’s resolve. They claim that the Gunners already have personal terms agreed with Gyokeres and now they are pushing to get their bid accepted.
An initial offer of £63.5m has reportedly been made by Arsenal as they look to get their business done quickly. However, Sporting president Frederico Varandas is believed to be ready to negotiate more for his asset.
Such a development leaves United in a position where they need to decide what they do next. Money is tight at Old Trafford currently with their Champions League status not yet guaranteed.
MEN Sport understands that Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap is the top target to strengthen the club’s attack this summer. The former Manchester City man will be available for £30m now the Tractor Boys have been relegated to the Championship.
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha is also a top target for the club. He is wanted as well as Delap with the Brazilian’s versatility seen as a major selling point.
