A police chase through the streets of Speke led to the discovery of a machete and cocaine stashed in a jar with a picture of an owl on it. Police officers were on patrol in the area at around 4.40pm yesterday, Thursday April 23, when they spotted a man smoking cannabis on Speke Church Road.
The man ran away when approached by the officers, who chased him on foot and detained him nearby on Belsford Way. He was found to be in possession of snap bags containing cannabis, around £500 in cash and two mobile phones, police said.

A search of a home linked to the suspect uncovered more cash, suspected cocaine in a glass jar, and a machete. The man was further arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a class A drug (cocaine) and acquiring/using/possessing criminal property. He has since been released under investigation.

Inspector Gaenor Kennedy said: “The suspect clearly thought he could outrun our officers, but sadly for him it wasn’t long before he was in the back of a police car.
“This was fantastic work by officers and highlights how we pro-actively look to disrupt drug supply and safeguard vulnerable people.
“Serious organised crime gangs are closely linked to serious violence, often using weapons such as firearms or knives, which is why it’s so important we tackle it relentlessly.
“Stop searches, warrants, land searches and arrests take place all year round, and in many instances, it is thanks to the public who tell us where there are issues in the community.
“If you have information on drug dealing and criminality in your area let us know and we will take action.”
