Stacey Rahman believes Prost8 UK ‘saved’ her father’s life

A thankful daughter is throwing a ‘huge’ fundraiser in support of the charity which ‘saved’ her father’s life. Stacey Rahman, aged 35, is hoping to raise as much money and awareness of Prost8 as possible.

Her father, Andrew Wootten, was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2022. Stacey believes he would not be here today without the help of Prost8 UK.

Stacey, of Packmoor, told StokeonTrentLive: “He had some tests done at the Royal Stoke and they called him over the phone to say he had cancer. They told him that it was in the early stages and advised him to do nothing for the moment. Instead of treatment, they recommended ‘active surveillance’ which is where they just take your bloods once every six months to keep an eye on it.

“Prior to this, my grandad had died from prostate cancer. And they had given him the exact same advice. It ended up spreading and in the end it killed him. So we said we didn’t feel comfortable just leaving it. But the hospital said that it wasn’t big enough to do anything with at the moment. He was told that you can generally only have radiotherapy once in your life so it wasn’t a good time. The other option was to have his prostate removed but that would leave him incontinent with erectile issues so he didn’t want that either.

“Because of our family history we didn’t know what to do. We started doing research into alternative therapies. I found something called focal therapy. It’s a treatment where the cancer cells are blasted with ultrasound waves. It’s effective but only works in the early stages. Staff at the Royal Stoke said he was suitable but that it wasn’t a treatment they currently offered.”

Stacey says the distraught family soon started looking into alternative therapies.

She explained: “We started looking into private focal therapy and the prices started from £15,000. My Dad wasn’t sure how we’d pay for it but I said we’d do some fundraising. I found a charity called Prost8 UK. I explained the situation to them and they got back to me within minutes. The founder of the charity, Paul, rang me and said they’d pay for the treatment.

“All we had to do was get referred to a hospital. We went to the Royal Stoke and asked to be referred to the Imperial Hospital in London. But the doctor said no. He said we’ve chosen our options so they weren’t willing to do a referral. Paul told me we could do what we wanted and to threaten them with legal action.

“In the end, they agreed to send my Dad’s medical notes to London. But that took around six months to happen. In the meantime, while that was all going on, my Dad’s symptoms got worse. He was bleeding and he needed the toilet a lot. I contacted Paul again and he said to get him seen right away. The Imperial Hospital redid all the tests and we got the results back in a few days. They told us the cancer was weeks away from spreading. Because of the severity my Dad got his prostate removed just to be safe.

“Now he has routine blood tests every three months to make sure everything is okay. And he’s been enjoying his life ever since. But I feel like without the help and advice of Prost8 that he wouldn’t be here today. We might have just been left on the wayside.”

Stacey believes Prost8 UK were instrumental in saving her Dad’s life. She has since become an ambassador for the charity.

She said: “I feel like because they saved his life, I owe them everything. Family is very important to me. I don’t know where I would be without my Dad. So this is why now I’m trying to fundraise as much as possible. Because there might be someone else out that needs this help.

Now Stacey is planning her largest fundraising event to date.

“So far I’ve done a Halloween fundraising party. I sold 100 tickets and did a tombola, a disco, a cake sale, a raffle and things like that. We managed to raise around £1,500. Now I’m doing a big June ball. It’s going to be the first Prost8 UK fundraiser of this scale in Stoke-on-Trent.

“There will be an opera singer on arrival along with free drinks. There’s a disco, a raffle and a tombola. And between each activity we’ll have live music and entertainment. I’ve been planning this for just over a year. It’s really important to raise as much money and spread the awareness of this amazing new charity as possible.

“Really I just want people to know that there is support out there and there is hope. You don’t have to just wait and see what happens. You can reach out and explore treatment options to stop it early before it has life-threatening injuries or leaves you with long-term side effects.”
