Three people have lost their lives in separate road crashes across Northern Ireland over the weekend, prompting renewed concern about safety.
Two fatal incidents occurred in Co Tyrone and Co Antrim.
Emergency services were called shortly before 6pm on Saturday following reports of a collision between a motorcycle and a car on the Glenavy Road near Maghaberry, in the Moira area.
Drivers of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene. A third person was taken to hospital for treatment.
In a separate incident, one person died following a single‑vehicle crash on the Derrycourtney Road in Caledon, Co Tyrone, which was reported shortly after 11pm.
Emergency services attended, but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. One person has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Two cars collided in a third crash at Belfast Road, near Nutt’s Corner in Co Antrim, but the nature of any injuries was unclear on Sunday evening. The road was closed in both directions.
Alliance MLA David Honeyford said the Glenavy Road has long been a concern.
“I have raised this road so many times. It is frightening. You have multiple junctions, it is one of the busiest roads in Northern Ireland, but there is no break in the traffic,” he said.
“People are crossing a dual carriage way essentially. It needs some sort of speed reduction, a roundabout, or something to allow a break in the traffic. The junctions need upgraded.
“Tragically two people have died. It is horrific. I don’t know them personally, but my heart goes out to the families and friends. It is hard to put into words. What do you say when you have another death on our roads? Any loss of life is horrific.
“There are accidents on the road regularly, but DfI have refused to do absolutely anything. We all need to look at our driving… but we must make that part of the road safer. ”
Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew has expressed condolences following the fatal road accident in Caledon.
The Fermanagh and South Tyrone said: “It is devastating to hear this tragic news.
“This will come as a terrible shock to his family, friends and the community and I want to extend my condolences to them at this tragic time.”
A UUP representative for Clogher Valley said the news of three deaths is incredibly sad.
Cllr Meta Graham told The Irish News: “Another tragedy has visited another family. It is incredibly sad. The emergency services have had to deal with a harrowing experience as any road traffic collision can be.
“It really is so very sad. Nobody goes out in a car with the intention that they are not coming back. It happens in a split second. I’m thinking of the families who have lost loved ones.”
Meanwhile, the main Omagh to Dromore route (A32) was closed in both directions on Sunday between Drumlish Road and Clanabogan after a serious crash.
