A single mum-of-two struggling to get by was forced to make a devastating choice.
During Sunday’s (April 26) episode of Rich House, Poor House, Mr Whippy owner Joe Sealey swapped his privileged lifestyle with Steph, her mum Gail, and her two daughters, Amelia, 12, and 7-year-old Darcey.
The Channel 5 hit show sees two families from opposite ends of the economic scale swap homes, budgets and ways of life for a week, fully immersing themselves in one another’s circumstances. However, early in the latest episode, Gail had to withdraw from the swap after falling ill.
In Widnes, Steph lived in a three-bedroom property that’s deteriorating, with the downstairs flooring falling apart and mould spreading in Amelia’s bedroom.
Working six days a week in telesales, Steph sells holidays she could never afford herself. Despite her dedication and success in the role, making ends meet remains a constant battle. Once essential bills are covered, the family survives on merely £98 per week for all other expenses.

Getting a taste of how the wealthiest 1% exist, they swapped homes with millionaire entrepreneur Joe, who lives a lavish £3.5m home in Wilmslow, near Manchester, alongside his wife Nicole and their two children.
Unable to participate with his family, he was joined by a family friend, Tracey, instead. The businessman traded his property – boasting six bedrooms, a cinema room, gym and even an indoor swimming pool – for a week in Steph’s council house 30 miles away.
While Joe and Tracey had to survive on a weekly allowance of £98, Steph, her children and mum Gail went to experience a taste of the high life with £2,000 at their disposal.
However, shortly after the swap began, Steph had to send her mum back home after she became too unwell to continue with the programme.
Gail, who lives just up the road from her daughter, has been struggling with poor health and remains a concern for Steph. The family has already endured tremendous heartache, having lost both Steph’s granddad and sister to cancer.

Gail’s disappointment at leaving was evident as she felt that she was “letting her family down”. Speaking to the camera, Steph is visibly emotional as she said: “I will quote my daughter, ‘you (Gail) will be letting us down, nanny, if you stay, not if you go.”
The following day, Steph was relieved upon receiving the good news that her mum was feeling better.
“She’s got a support network, so it takes the pressure off me because I know she’s got all that at home,” Steph said. “Now I think it’s going to help me relax and enjoy it more as an experience because I’ve not got that massive worry going on.”
With renewed spirits, Steph made the most of the remaining experience, and when she finally met Joe and Tracey at the swap’s conclusion, she was moved to tears by an extraordinary gesture.
Joe went the extra mile to assist the single mum, redecorating her home, surprising her with a family getaway, and promising to give her £20k from the first sales made after a successful business meeting.
Not only that, but he went one step further by offering her a position working alongside his sales team, with an opening salary of £60k per year.
