Jamie Carragher says he can’t wait for the season to end so that Liverpool can reset this summer and go again under Arne Slot next term.

The Reds are on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League, but the campaign has fallen well below expectations. It is anticipated that Liverpool will bring in some additional quality in the transfer market and Slot has already proven that he is capable of taking the team to the top of the standings after winning the title at the first time of asking.

This weekend, Liverpool heads to Manchester United with the chance to put down a marker at Old Trafford. It then has Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brentford in its final fixtures.

“It’s not been a great season from a Liverpool point of view,” Carragher told BBC Sport. “I can’t wait for it to be over and we can start again next season.

“But listen, we’ve been spoiled in the last 10 years. Last season we won the league, so we’re allowed an off-season, but hopefully that doesn’t happen next season.

“Look, he’s a manager who has won the Premier League. There are a lot of clubs in the Premier League now looking for new managers and they want to find a manager who they think can win the league.

“Liverpool have got one. He has won the league before. He’ll be as disappointed as anyone associated with Liverpool with how this season has gone.

“It looks like he is going to be the manager next season so let’s get behind him and hopefully we’ll have a better season next season. As I said, he’s already won the Premier League, so why can’t he do it again?”

Slot was asked in his press conference on Friday about how he will assess the campaign. He insisted that it was the job of others to do that, even though he will need to learn from what has gone wrong.

He also spoke about the importance of this weekend’s fixture, even with both Liverpool and Manchester United set to finish inside the Champions League spots.

“I think it’s always like that, every game you play has influence on your league position,” Slot outlined. “So that’s not only when you play Man United, it’s every week in every game.

“But we are aware of the fact that it’s a very big game, not only because we play Man United, but definitely also to qualify for the Champions League and to get the highest possible position in the league table, which of course is something we want.

“We wanted to, of course, win the league. That’s not possible. And then you have to try to end up as high as possible, and that’s what we are trying week in, week out, and that’s what we’re going to try Sunday again as well.”

Liverpool.com says: Finishing ahead of Manchester United would be a boost for Liverpool and winning at Old Trafford, just like the victory at Everton recently, would be another moment to remember despite a tough season. That is what is most at stake on Sunday.
