Handicaps don’t come much more competitive than this as just 5lb separates the 13 runners on weight-adjusted Timeform ratings, with recent Ayr runner-up Kalganov the nominal top-rated being 1lb ahead of Berkshire Phantom and Coconut Bay.
Sir Garfield is respected at a big price from his good draw, but in a wide-open race, it could be worth chancing SUNNY ORANGE, who has gone well fresh and at this track and resumes on a tempting mark with his apprentice taking off 10lb. Last month’s C&D winner, Miss Willows, Kalganov, and Dawn of Liberation, who sports first-time blinkers, are among the other appealing ones along with recent Southwell winner King Sharja.
The Ed Bethell-trained SURPRISED is the only previous winner in the field and also looks the most promising, having won in good style at Beverley when last seen in September (building on a good debut there a month earlier).
Though that form has a mixed look to it, she can defy a penalty, with the experienced Georgecandoit and Far Ahead, who shaped nicely at Beverley last time out, feared most. Any market support for Iwantmytimewithyou should be noted, as whilst he appears to be a handicap project, his trainer only sends two horses to this meeting, and the last four renewals of this race have been won by southern-based trainers.
Top-weight MARBUZET edged out Cascade Hall at Ayr and is fancied to follow up from just 1lb higher, having gone close in this race 12 months ago when only beaten a neck by the David O’Meara-trained Animato. Cascade Hall has fewer miles on the clock and should go well again from an unchanged mark, while Red Force One should be much closer to form on the back of his Southwell return.
He has run well here before and the memories of last year’s hat-trick are not far away, especially with the step back up in trip here in his favour. The Timeform pace prediction of ‘very weak’ suggests that this race could be run to suit Zephylyn, whose jockey Jason Hart could be allowed to dictate his own fractions.
Again, the Timeform pace prediction of ‘very weak’ could mean that TEES AGGREGATES is the one to side with from his good draw in stall three. He looks to have a bit more scope from his mark and can bounce back to form having gone close here on his return over C&D.
Top-weight Brazilian Belle might be the pick of the four fillies in opposition, as she is in decent form and drops into a 0-70 handicap for the first time. Having said that, Lunar Force looked better than the bare result when short of room at Beverley last time and commands plenty of respect as a result.
Top-weight WITHOUT FLAW is given a chance to build on her near miss on reappearance at Redcar at the beginning of the month. Tina Jackson’s filly was a head second to Sugar Baby last time, and a repeat of that effort may be enough to see her record an overdue second career success.
Tim Easterby pair Canaria Queen, who shaped as if needing the run last time, and Beverley winner Ifonlytheycudtalk head the dangers along with Ann Duffield’s Azucen, who should come on for a recent spin at Thirsk. C&D winner Golden Prosperity has gained both wins in cheekpiece,s so it is a little disconcerting to see the headgear dispensed with once more. Dunnington Lad and Stroxx look the pick of the remainder.
The former Jessica Macey-trained SPRING CHORUS had plenty in hand on her recent first outing for Michael Herrington and is taken to make light of a 5lb penalty. She led on the bridle when scoring at Beverley a week ago and looks the one to beat if handling this different course (both wins at Beverley).
Timeform ‘Horse In Focus’ Penelope’s Sister, who was third at Ayr last time, and Wolverhampton fifth Star Delta have made encouraging returns to the track in recent weeks and may provide the main opposition unless the betting speaks in the favour of Sam England’s new recruit Made All who looks well treated on the pick of his form for Anthony Brittain but is still searching for his maiden success. The front-running dual-purpose performer Max Of Stars looks the pick of the rest.
The veteran sprinters take centre stage here, and the nod goes to the former Danny Brooke-trained DREAM DEAL, who is given a chance to build on a promising first run for Tim Easterby over C&D last month. One Of Our Own won three times over C&D in cheekpieces last season and could leave behind her first two starts this year, now refitted with that headgear.
Fellow course winners Patontheback and the consistent One More Dream, who impressed at Doncaster last time, are others likely to have a say. Quercus trumps all his rivals with five course wins to his name, and he’s no back number despite appearing to be beaten fair and square here last time.
