Glasgow’s Southside is quickly taking over as one of the city’s top destinations for a night out, with a growing mix of stylish new bars alongside traditional pubs that have been serving locals for decades. From modern up-and-coming venues to long-standing boozers with plenty of characters, the area offers a range of options and there really is something for everyone in the Southside.

For the Daily Record’s latest Pub of the Week, we’re heading to a well-loved Southside bar that has been praised by customers as ‘friendly’ and an ‘easy five star’ favourite.

The Victoria Bar is located on Victoria Road, only a short walk from the popular Queen’s Park and lively Pollokshaws Road. Its location makes it a handy stop in the Southside with plenty of other pubs nearby, making it a great starting point if you want to take on a Southside pub crawl.

Inside, there’s a packed calendar of events that keeps regulars coming back. From quiz nights and bingo sessions to karaoke and live sport, there’s always something going on.

The pub regularly shows football and rugby matches, and its official Facebook page keeps punters updated on themed nights, including 80s events, St Patrick’s Day celebrations and Halloween parties.

There is a wide range of whiskeys, spirits and beers on tap, including Tennent’s, Guinness and Murphy’s Irish stout.

But what really stands out at the Victoria Bar is the sense of community. Staff and regulars often get involved in charity work close to their hearts, including the 22.7km Kiltwalk and fundraising efforts for the Moira Fund, which supports causes in memory of Moira Jones, who was murdered in Queen’s Park in 2008. The pub has helped raise more than £8,000 for charity through various events and challenges.

It also holds memorial drinks for customers who have sadly passed away, reflecting the close-knit atmosphere that many punters say defines the bar.

With the World Cup on the horizon, the Victoria Bar’s own Tartan Army is expected to be out in full force once again, with plans to stay open late for Scotland games as fans gather to support the national team take on their first World Cup since 1998.

On Google, the Victoria Bar holds an impressive 4.2 rating out of five based on 196 reviews from visitors. One visitor praised the pub for its friendly punters and staff, writing: “Prefect evening. Just wanted to have a pint of local beer. Got a lovely conversation with locals and the bar tender instead.

“Not as crowded as other pubs, good variety of whisky and beer, friendly people. Clean and reasonable prices though. We’ll be coming back!” While another penned: “Friendly wee place. Had a great time. Staff were lovely.”

Friendly seems to be a fitting word for the pub as a third review read: “Easy 5 stars. Never too busy unless Celtic or Scotland match day. Always had fun there and enjoyed the TV/board games/chatting to the folks at the bar. Nice friendly pub.”
