Yet, fans can enjoy their fill of the Scottish actress, 37, before the BBC programme launches as her ‘must-watch’ and ‘brilliant’ show is ready to stream on Channel 4.
Sharon’s defining moment arrived when she portrayed Rae Earl in the acclaimed E4 series My Mad Fat Diary. The programme chronicles Rae, a struggling teenager, as she reconnects with her mates following a four-month stay in a psychiatric facility.
Yet, her friends remain oblivious to this and assume she’d been away in France. Rae endeavours to rebuild her friendship with her closest companion, Chloe, who knows nothing of Rae’s mental wellbeing and body confidence struggles, while also attempting to win over Chloe’s newer friends Finn, Archie, Izzy and Chop.
The programme, adapted from the book My Fat, Mad Teenage Diary by Rae Earl, debuted in 2013 and ran for three seasons, concluding in 2015, reports the Mirror.

Beyond Sharon’s defining performance, it also featured numerous recognisable faces during their fledgling careers. Killing Eve actress, Jodie Comer, portrays Rae’s closest friend Chloe.
Additionally, Hollyoaks actor Nico Mirallegro takes on Rae’s romantic interest Finn, Spike Island’s Jordan Murphy portrays Chop, Trying actress Ciara Baxendale plays Izzy and Dan Cohen as Archie.
Further cast members include Keith Allen as Victor Earl, Rae’s father, Claire Rushbrook as Linda Earl-Bouchtat, Rae’s mum, Ian Hart as Kester Gill, Rae’s therapist who supports her through her difficulties, and Debra Stephenson as Chloe’s mum.
The programme has proven enormously popular with audiences, achieving an outstanding 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

One viewer commented: “Such a brilliant show, don’t be fooled in thinking it’s for teens. The way it covers mental health issues is so spot on and especially Rae the lead character she’s so relatable even with her attitude and flaws. Must watch.”
Another audience member wrote: “A great comedy, with all the happy and sad elements that happen in the life of an average teenager” while a further enthusiast noted: “MMFD series 1 is fresh funny and so relatable. Sharon Rooney is a revelation. Script is terrific and the entire cast brilliant.”
