Greece is stepping up efforts to lure back skilled workers who left during its decade-long financial crisis, with a new recruitment event planned in London.
About 420,000 to 450,000 Greeks emigrated during the crisis years, according to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority, in what became a major “brain drain” for the country.
The Labor Ministry’s “Rebrain Greece” initiative will hold an event on May 9 in London, aiming to connect expatriate Greek professionals with employers back home. The gathering will bring together dozens of companies operating in Greece, offering hundreds of specialized and senior-level positions across sectors including finance, energy, healthcare, tourism and consulting.
Labor and Social Security Minister Niki Kerameus said the initiative is designed to encourage Greeks abroad to consider returning.
“This is a genuine opportunity for our compatriots in the United Kingdom who wish to explore the prospect of returning to Greece,” she told state-run Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA), adding that the government is intensifying efforts to reverse the outflow of talent.
