Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement with Brazil’s football federation that will see Matheus Cunha rested in the final weeks of the season. Cunha returned from injury to score in United’s 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian had missed United’s win over Brentford last week with an injury, but recovered in time to feature for Michael Carrick’s side in the victory over Liverpool.

United’s win over their bitter rivals saw them clinch qualification for the Champions League with three matches left to play.

As a result, ESPN Brasil report that United have reached an agreement with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to rest Cunha during the club’s final three Premier League fixtures this season.

This, the report states, is to allow Cunha to have as much time as possible to recover and be fully fit to feature for Brazil at this summer’s World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

United’s final three matches of the season will see them host Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford, as well as travel to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light and Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

It remains to be seen how much game time Cunha will be given during the remaining games of the season, and if the aforementioned report turns out to be accurate and the Brazilian is rested during the run-in, with the return to fitness of Patrick Dorgu perhaps offering Carrick the chance to rest the Brazilian on the left side of attack.

Cunha joined United last summer from Wolves in a deal worth £62.5million, and the forward has gone on to score nine goals during his debut season for the Reds.

After scoring his ninth goal of the season in the victory over Liverpool, Cunha reflected on how he’s settled into life at United following his move from Wolves last year.

“It’s like I said, I feel like football is representing life,” Cunha said after the win over Liverpool.

“Of course, I have hard moments and everyone needs to be strong, we need to wait for the good moments and then work so hard and I feel that it’s only the start of the journey.

“But I have so many things to learn, so many things to continue, and I also have to help the team to achieve some level that I want to achieve in particular, and of course, help the group to achieve together.”
