An explosion which killed two people in Bristol is said to have been caused by an ex-partner according to locals.

The blast in Sterncourt Road, Frenchay, on Sunday, May 3, killed a man and a woman and left three injured.

Reports now suggest the man set off an explosive device, killing himself and his ex-partner.

The three other injured people including a child have since been released from hospital.

Tributes have been shared online after the incident which has shocked the community.

One described the woman as an “amazing friend”, adding: “I can’t believe you were taken from us.”

Others spoke of their shock and offered condolences to the families. “I’m so so sorry for your awful loss,” one comment said, while another said: “Sending our love and support for you and your family, RIP.”

Rumours have been circulating online that a grenade was used but that has not been confirmed.

Police are still investigating the blast which happened at 6.30am.

A cordon was put up but most of the evacuated residents were told on Sunday night that they could return home.

Yesterday a white tent was visible in Sterncourt Road, near a house with a window boarded up. Forensic officers were still at the scene, with sheets of tarpaulin hung to conceal parts of the street.

Police have said the explosion is being treated as ‘suspicious‘ but confirmed they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

In a statement made on Sunday, May 3, Superintendent Matt Ebbs’ statement said: “At about 6.17am, we received a call to attend a domestic-related incident at a residential address in Sterncourt Road.

“Officers were sent to the scene but shortly before they arrived – at just after 6.30am – there was an explosion inside the property.

“A woman and a man have died at the address and we’re treating the explosion as suspicious. Their families have been updated and are being supported by specially trained officers. Our thoughts are very much with them.”

They stressed it was not being treated as a terrorist incident.
