Two paramedics were rushed to hospital after the ambulance they were travelling in was involved in a crash – as it made its way to hospital with a patient.

The incident took place in Edinburgh yesterday evening, and saw the ambulance colliding with another vehicle, leading to a man being arrested.

Pictures from the scene showed that both vehicles were badly damaged in the collision, which took place in the city’s Clermiston area and saw the road in question closed.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.05pm on Saturday, 10 May, 2025, officers received a report of a two vehicle crash on Drum Brae North, Edinburgh.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “One of our ambulances en-route to hospital was involved in a road traffic collision on Drumbrae Terrace in Edinburgh at 2010 hours on Saturday.

“The patient on board was conveyed to Western General Hospital by another ambulance and our two crew members were conveyed to New Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Two other patients were conveyed to NERI.”

The emergency services were called to the scene after the alarm was raised on Saturday evening. Pictures showed the side of the ambulance badly damaged due to the impact.

The wheel could be seen to be hanging off with debris scattered across the road, and a black BMW convertible was also pictured sitting off the road and seriously damaged following the crash.

The whole front driver’s side of the vehicle, as well as the door, could be seen to be ripped off as a result. Police, further ambulance crews and the fire brigade could all be seen in attendance.

One local said on social media: “[The incident happened on] Drum Brae North. A car hit the side of an ambulance. Everyone is okay. The road is shut for the rest of day.”
