Andy Last is backing Hull FC veteran Tom Briscoe to play on next season – so long as his form and his fitness are telling him it’s the right decision.

Turning 36 years old last month, Briscoe is out of contract at the end of the year. However, the Black and Whites hold a one-year option in their favour to extend the outside back’s stay at the club by another season.

The option was placed into Briscoe’s new contract at the end of last summer, with the winger showcasing this year that he still has the ability to play to a good standard in Super League.

Starting the Challenge Cup tie at Salford back in February, Briscoe then had to sit out the first three league games of the season, but after coming into the team at Wakefield Trinity after an injury to Harvey Barron, he has been ever-present since, scoring three tries on the right wing and, more importantly, working hard and carrying the ball strong out of the backfield.

A real professional and key member of the environment Hull want to create at first-team level, Briscoe has many factors pointing in his favour, plus the depth, competition, and enhancement he brings to both Barron and Lewis Martin. That role is one the club are well aware of, and so long as the veteran continues to deliver on the pitch, it could be an added reason for a potential activation of his option later this year.

That would take Briscoe, who has scored 104 tries in 198 appearances for Hull, into a tenth year at the club – with the player also having had spells at Leeds Rhinos, Leigh Leopards, and England during a 450-plus-game career.

“He’s enjoying his rugby,” Last said. “He felt confident in his ability to perform this year. That’s why he made the decision to go around for one more year.

“It feels as though he’s more than capable of holding up his end of the bargain and when selected, he’ll play well. Tom’s played really, really well this year.

“Unfortunately, Harvey picked up a nasty injury, and Tom’s come in and taken his chance and has proved why he’s been probably one of the best Super League wingers to play for Hull FC. He’s so strong out of the backfield; he carries a ball really, really well. And he’s a try scorer.

“He’s enjoying his rugby at the moment. It (playing for another year) will all be dependent on his body and how he feels he’s valued within the team, but for all of the time he is doing a good job, I’m sure Tom will continue to want to play.”

Briscoe is one of several players still out of contract at the end of 2026. A decision has already been made not to renew Jed Cartwright’s deal, with calls still to be made on the likes of Yusuf Aydin, who has held talks with the club, not to mention Ligi Sao, Brad Fash, and Roman Dawson.
