King Charles III‘s recent four-day U.S. trip to mark 250 years of American independence has reignited tensions behind the scenes between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex over how to handle their relationship with the monarch and Britain’s royal family, a new report has claimed.

According to Closer magazine, Meghan Markle was deeply upset after watching her father-in-law and Queen Camilla warmly interact with President Donald Trump — who’s spent years publicly criticizing both Meghan and husband Prince Harry — during the elder royals’ diplomatic visit to America, which wrapped on April 30.

A source told Closer that while Harry understands his father’s diplomatic responsibilities, the situation has still taken an emotional toll.

“Harry is doing his best to stay pragmatic and anytime questions about why Charles is meeting with Trump come up, he’s quick to point out that it’s simply part of his father’s role,” the source claimed. “But he does admit that the whole situation has been keeping him up at night.”

Meghan’s fury

According to the source, Meghan and Harry are not entirely aligned on how to respond to the situation.

“Of course, it’s tough for Harry to sit on the sidelines while his dad breaks bread with someone who seems to want to have him and his wife thrown out of the country,” the source alleged. “And the fact that he’s not getting the same level of attention from Charles” — who’s spent more time with Trump than his second son in recent years — “only makes it worse. Harry is biting his tongue because he knows reacting will only stir up more trouble but it’s been very difficult, especially because Meghan does not want to give Charles a pass on this.”

While Harry is seemingly trying to avoid escalating tensions with his family, Meghan allegedly feels far less willing to stay quiet.

“In her view, this is exactly the kind of situation where Harry should be standing his ground, not making excuses for his father,” the source claimed. “Meghan is fuming and saying it sends the wrong message if they let this go unchallenged. … [She’s] taking it very personally and doesn’t understand how Harry can simply sit back and try to explain this away.”

Harry is instead focused on protecting what he sees as fragile progress in rebuilding ties with his family six years after their public falling out. “But his stance is that they need to keep their eyes on the prize and not do anything that could jeopardize their long-term goal of re-building their relationship with his family,” the source explained.

The alleged disagreement comes amid ongoing speculation about Harry’s future relationship with The Firm after he insisted during a recent ITV interview conducted during his trip to Ukraine that he “will always be part of the royal family” and remains devoted to public service. “I am here working, doing the things that I was born to do,” Harry told the British television network on April 24.

Trump’s Sussex criticism

Trump has hardly hidden his feelings about Harry and Meghan over the years.

During a 2022 interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan, the commander-in-chief blasted Harry as weak and controlled by his wife.

“Harry is whipped like no person I think I’ve ever seen,” Trump said. “I’m not a fan of Meghan, I’m not a fan, and I wasn’t right from the beginning. I think poor Harry is being led around by his nose.” Trump also predicted the marriage would “end, and it’ll end bad,” adding, “I wonder if Harry’s going to go back on his hands and knees.”

Questions surrounding Harry’s U.S. immigration status later intensified scrutiny after conservative group The Heritage Foundation sued the Department of Homeland Security seeking records tied to whether the duke disclosed past drug use detailed in his 2023 memoir, Spare.

Though a judge eventually ruled Harry’s “privacy interest outweighs any public interest” in releasing the records, speculation reignited in 2025 when a judge ordered portions of the documents released with redactions.

The same year, however, Trump appeared to soften his stance when asked whether he would ever try to deport Harry. “I don’t want to do that,” the president said. “I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.”
