Residents on a street labelled “Shameless Green” due to rampant anti-social behaviour have said there has been no change one year on following recent public fights and arson attacks.
In the latest in a string of incidents, emergency services were called to Killynure Green in Carryduff, Co Down, on Wednesday after two cars in a driveway were set on fire – with a young child inside the property just yards away.
It comes as residents warned there have been “five street fights in a fortnight” in the area which they say is plagued by anti-social behaviour.
Last year, residents spoke to Belfast Live about the anti-social behaviour issues on the street, which they labelled “Shameless Green”, saying residents had been attacked and intimidated, cars had been burnt out, homes had been criminally damaged and “erratic drug and drink-fuelled rampages” were a common occurrence. Now, one year on, they say the problems continue and have never been addressed.
Belfast Live has seen video footage of a recent incident on April 28, when two women fought in the middle of the street in front of children, only for other residents to intervene and break it up. It has been alleged this is one of five fights that have taken place on the street in the past two weeks.

One resident said, “Over the past year, not a thing has been done, and the same people are still here causing problems for everyone else.”
Alliance Castlereagh South Councillor Jamie Harpur has condemned ongoing anti-social behaviour in the Killynure Green area and said that residents have contacted him, saying they are fearful of leaving their homes.
He said: “The scenes we are hearing about in Killynure Green are simply not acceptable and are not what anyone wants for Carryduff. I have been contacted by a number of residents, including young families, who are now genuinely fearful of leaving their homes.
“This level of disorder is alarming. Families should not have to witness violence or deal with the aftermath of such destructive behaviour on their doorstep.
“I have spoken to the PSNI, who are currently investigating the incidents, and I would urge anyone who has information to assist them with their investigation. It is vital that those responsible are held accountable.
“I will continue to work with the PSNI and council officers to ensure that appropriate action is taken and that residents feel safe again in their own community.”
Castlereagh South DUP councillor Brian Higginson said: “I have been on the ground in the Green since early this morning (May 6), working closely with the PSNI and Choice Housing.
“I want to thank members of the local community who helped the resident safely escape from their home.

“This kind of behaviour has no place in our community, and I strongly condemn those responsible for this attack.”
Inspector McCorry said: “Officers attended the scene alongside colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service who extinguished the blaze.
“We are treating this report as arson – with a line of enquiry that one vehicle was initially set on fire which then spread to another parked in the same driveway.
“Thankfully, no injuries were reported. However, the house was occupied at the time with a child inside – the consequences of what happened could have been far more serious.
“Extensive damage was caused to both vehicles, and enquiries are ongoing today to determine exactly what happened, who was involved and a motive.

Spokesperson for Choice Housing said : “Choice works closely with tenants in the area and although we cannot comment on individual cases due to tenant confidentiality, we take all reports – and the safety and wellbeing of our tenants very seriously and where we can, we will work in partnership with the local community and statutory agencies to resolve any matters that are brought to our attention.
“We understand that the PSNI is currently investigating the incident and, as such, we are unable to comment while enquiries are ongoing.”
