London police are investigating after a person died at the city’s micro-shelter site on Wednesday.
Emergency crews were called to the shelter community on Cheese Factory Road near Hwy 401 and Highbury Avenue shortly after 12 p.m. to reports of an unresponsive individual.
“At this time, the death does not appear to be suspicious in nature, and we are working in collaboration with members of the Chief Coroner’s office,” said Sgt. Sandasha Bough of the London Police Service in a statement.
The identity of the deceased has not been released.
The site, which houses about 70 people experiencing homelessness, is operated by the City of London, along with outreach workers and security firm Xpera, and has been running since February.
“This afternoon we were advised by the site operator, Xpera, that a resident had passed away in the housing community. We are saddened to hear of the individual’s passing,” said Kevin Dickins, deputy city manager of social and health development for the City of London, in a statement.
“The operator is managing the response and are providing supports to other residents that need it. The City is working closely, supporting Xpera.”
