Birmingham City is preparing to welcome FC Barcelona to St Andrew’s this summer in a pre-season fixture.

The match forms part of Barcelona’s revised pre-season programme ahead of the 2026–27 campaign, with the Catalan club scheduled to establish a temporary training base at St George’s Park, England’s national football centre, for approximately two weeks from 27 July.

Although the fixture date hasn’t been finalised, the event is a major commercial and brand-building opportunity for Birmingham City as it strengthens its profile domestically and internationally.

Barcelona’s visit is expected to attract global media coverage, enhanced sponsorship visibility, and increased matchday revenues, while also positioning Birmingham City as an attractive destination for elite international sporting events.

Although several senior Spanish internationals may still be on post-World Cup leave depending on Spain’s progression in the tournament, the travelling squad could still feature emerging global stars such as Lamine Yamal.

The World Cup schedule has significantly influenced European clubs’ summer preparations this year, with the tournament taking place across the United States, Mexico and Canada between 11 June and 19 July.

In response, several clubs have opted against traditional long-haul commercial tours in favour of shorter European-based training camps.

Barcelona, currently on course for consecutive La Liga titles under head coach Hansi Flick, stated that the World Cup calendar made it “technically and commercially unfeasible” to organise a conventional overseas tour this summer.

In addition to the Birmingham fixture, Barcelona is also expected to stage exhibition matches in Nairobi and Morocco as part of its international pre-season engagement strategy.
