A major emergency response can be seen in the Rutherglen area this evening as Scottish Fire and Rescue crews battle a fire within a shop on Baronald Street.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen billowing into the air, with drivers over the M74 reporting sightings.

Emergency services are on scene this evening, May 7, with multiple fire appliances and police in attendance. A cordon is in place while crews tackle flames within the premises.

South Lanarkshire Council confirmed that road closures are in place on Farmeloan Road, Dalmarnock Road and at the Cambuslang Road junction.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area.

An update from Police Scotland reads: “Emergency services are in attendance following a fire at a shop premises in Baronald Street, Rutherglen which was reported at 6.40pm on Thursday, 7 May, 2026.

“Baronald Street along with Dalmarnock Road and Farmeloan are currently closed.

“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area at this time.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been approached for comment.
