Reform UK has made substantial gains in the early results of England’s local elections, while the count in Scotland is set to begin at 9am.

In England, where counting began overnight, a total of 41 councils, out of 136, had declared by just after 8am, with major gains for Reform and significant losses for Labour.

There were big losses for the Conservatives as well, along with more modest gains for the Liberal Democrats and the Greens.

Reform UK was on top this morning with 353 councillors, with Labour in second with 245 (down 249). 

The Lib Dems gained 36 councillors for a total of 241, while the Tories lost 130, giving them 226.

The Green Party had 48 councillors (up 25) and there were 20 independents (down 16).

Polls closed in Scotland at 10pm last night, with the count due to get underway at 9am.

The first results are not expected until this afternoon.
