Bruins forward James Hagens and defenseman Mason Lohrei were named to the preliminary roster for the United States men’s national team that will look to defend its title in the IIHF World Championship, May 15-31, in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland.

At Wednesday’s annual wrap-up news conference, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said forward Sean Kuraly also would be on the Team USA roster, and mentioned three other Bruins would be competing in the tournament: Fraser Minten (Canada), Joonas Korpisalo (Finland), and Henri Jokiharju (Finland). Former Bruin Connor Clifton also is on the US squad.

Other players on the US roster with local ties include Capitals forward Ryan Leonard (Amherst, and Hagens’s former linemate at Boston College), Lightning defenseman Declan Carlile (Merrimack), Blackhawks forward Sam Lafferty (Brown), Blackhawks/IceHogs goalie Drew Commesso (Norwell, Boston University), Flames forward Matt Coronato (Harvard), Predators defenseman Ryan Ufko (UMass), and Maple Leafs goalie Joe Woll (BC).

Get Starting Point

A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.

Panthers assistant GM Brett Peterson, a native of Northborough who played at BC from 2000-04, is the general manager of the team.

“We’re excited about our group,” said Peterson. “We’ve got a good blend of players that are excited about representing our country and competing for a gold medal. We’re looking forward to the tournament and know Switzerland will be a great host.”

The team began training in Mannheim, Germany, on Friday, where it will play a pre-tournament game against Germany on Sunday. It will open tournament play against Switzerland, which the United States defeated, 1-0, in the title game last year for its first gold medal in 92 years, on May 15.
