Mitchell Balmas commits to Steelers with new Two-Year Deal
The Sheffield Steelers are delighted to confirm that star forward and leading scorer Mitchell Balmas has signed a new two-year contract with the club.
Since arriving in Sheffield in 2023 from the American Hockey League’s Iowa Wild, Balmas has established himself as one of the most exciting and productive players in the Elite League. Remarkably, he has not missed a single game for the Steelers, amassing an outstanding 104 goals and 251 points in 218 appearances across league, Challenge Cup, Play Off, and Champions Hockey League competition.
His incredible consistency and offensive production have already propelled him to 21st on the Steelers’ all-time scoring list after just three seasons with the club.

From the moment he first stepped onto the ice in orange, Balmas made an immediate impact. His elite skating ability, vision, quick hands, and clinical finishing quickly earned him a reputation as one of the league’s most dangerous forwards. During his first season in Sheffield, he played a key role in the Steelers’ historic 2023–24 treble-winning campaign, helping the club secure the Elite League title, Challenge Cup, and Play Off Championship.
Head Coach Aaron Fox was delighted to secure Balmas on a long-term deal:
“It’s really exciting to get Balms back on a two-year contract. Anytime you can lock up the league MVP for multiple years, you’re going to feel pretty good about it.
“Balms has been such an important part of our group since arriving in Sheffield. His offensive numbers speak for themselves, but he also contributes on the penalty kill and really cares about that side of the game.
“He’s a superstar player, but at the same time he’s extremely coachable and very low maintenance — which isn’t always the case with players who put up those kinds of numbers.
“It’s obviously great to have him back.”
Speaking from his home in Canada, Balmas explained why extending his stay in Sheffield was an easy decision:
“Sheffield feels like my second home. It’s no secret that I love playing for the Steelers and skating at the Arena in front of our incredible fans night after night.
“From the moment I arrived, I felt comfortable here. It became a place I could truly call home, and I think that’s the same for a lot of guys on the team. Players like Greener, Dowdy, and Dominic Cormier have all built something special here.
“The core group we have is really important, and we all trust the management and coaching staff to keep building a team capable of competing for every trophy available.”
Balmas also admitted that the timing felt right to make a longer-term commitment to the club:
“I’d previously signed three one-year deals, but this felt like the right time to commit to a two-year agreement.
“I know the club, I know the people, I know the city and I’m proud to be a Steeler for a long time to come.”
The return of Balmas represents another major piece of business for the Steelers as preparations continue for the 2026–27 season.
