With so many good options to pick from when planning a holiday to a European country, it can be easy to just stick to the main tourist points, such as Spain, France, or Turkey. But one Brit is now urging people to look towards a lesser-known country with less tourists.
At just 160 square kilometres, it is one of Europe’s best kept secrets, yet it is full of character and beauty. It feels as though it has been pulled straight out of a fairytale, with its castles and charming villages, which makes one wonder why it isn’t more popular. To bring more awareness to it, one holidaymaker named Reanna, from Dorset, took to her Instagram account to boast about the country to her 70,800 followers.
“Bucket list destination that should be on everyone’s European radar… Welcome to Liechtenstein,” Reanna wrote in the caption of the post.
It’s one of the world’s smallest countries but despite its size, its beauty makes for an incredible holiday. Liechtenstein is a hidden gem in Europe and a destination people often forget to visit.
According to Statista, the country sees just over 100,000 tourists a year. In 2024, tourists spent over 200,000 nights here, making it the European destination with the fewest annual visitors.
Its capital, Vaduz, is home to the royal family and it offers a glimpse into the country’s unique blend of modernity and tradition. The scenic country is home to alpine landscapes, medieval castles and a vibrant cultural scene.

One of the most popular places to visit is Vaduz Castle which is visible from across the country. The castle was first built some 700 years ago and is a popular spot for tourists to visit. It is still the palace and official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein.
If you want to take in the gorgeous nature and views of the country, you can also head up the Sareis Chairlift, which offers you incredible views of the surrounding scenery. While you will be see all over the country, you will even be able to look all the way to Austria.
For those looking to explore some nature, Liechtenstein is the perfect place, with an abundance of quiet hiking trails that are incredibly scenic. It is also the perfect place for tourists to cycle, and also ski during the winter months.
Reanna wrote: “Nestled between Austria and Switzerland, Liechtenstein may be small, but it’s packed with charm, history, and incredible views.”
If you’re looking for somewhere off the beaten path to visit, Lichtenstein is a unique location and one you might not have thought about visiting before. It will offer a different kind of trip and you won’t be one of thousands of tourists exploring the area.
“While it might not be on everyone’s bucket list (yet), it’s the perfect country to spend a day or two, whilst visiting Switzerland (it’s super easy to drive, or walk, across the border),” the post read.
People soon took to the comment section to share their thoughts, as many shared their wishes to visit the small European country.
“Liechtenstein looks really so pretty. I would love to visit it,” one person commented. Someone else wrote: “Such a beautiful place!”
“Omg i wanna go SO BAD,” a third wrote, while another user said: “Looks absolutely beautiful.”
