Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch’s remake of divorce dark comedy The War of the Roses has set a release date for the UK.
Titled The Roses, the movie follows couple Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch) as they seem to have it all: successful careers, loving children and a rock-solid marriage.
Things shift when Theo’s career takes an unexpected dive whilst Ivy enjoys greater professional success, bringing the pair’s resentments to a head.
The movie has been confirmed to hit UK cinemas on September 1 (which is, weirdly, on a Monday and may shift to a weekend). The UK release follows the previously announced US release date of August 29.
A remake of the 1989 classic The War of the Roses — which was based on Warren Adler’s 1981 novel of the same name — the upcoming movie boasts a star-studded cast.

Alongside Colman and Cumberbatch in the lead roles, the ensemble is rounded out by Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa, Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Andy Samberg and Stath Lets Flats star Jamie Demetriou, as well as Allison Janney, Kate McKinnon, Zoë Chao and Belinda Bromilow.
The Roses is directed by Jay Roach from a script by Tony McNamara, who also penned the acclaimed Colman movie The Favourite.
Colman and Cumberbatch won’t just star in the film but will serve as producers under their respective banners of South of the Rivers and SunnyMarch.

“We have been cooking this up with our friends at SunnyMarch for some time, and it has been an absolute thrill to see it spring into life under Jay’s passionate and thoughtful guidance,” Colman and producing partner Ed Sinclair said when the movie was announced last year.
“He and Tony are a match made in cinematic comedy heaven.”
The Roses releases in US cinemas on August 29. In the UK, the film will be out on September 1.
