A new study has named the UK’s most “walkable” city — and it’s just an hour from parts of Wales. The study examined the UK’s major cities to determine which are the most navigable on foot, with the picturesque city of Bath taking the top honour. Boasting a walkability score of 99.04, Bath was crowned the UK’s most pedestrian-friendly destination.

The city’s key attractions are situated within 1.3 miles of one another, requiring just 29 minutes to cover on foot. These include the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and the Royal Crescent, reports the Express. On Reddit, one fan of the city enthused: “Bath is a wonderful city to walk in. I’ve lived here for two years without a car, and it’s been a pleasure.

“The University is on a hill, so some students don’t like walking up it much and tend to get the bus. The bus can get busy at peak times. You can get a scooter halfway up the hill at the moment. If you’re going up five days a week for 9am, it might get annoying. But overall, no, you don’t need a car, and often you’re better off without one.”

On Tripadvisor, a visitor who recently explored Bath remarked: “Bath is incredibly beautiful. The atmosphere is romantic and good to spend all day getting to know the city.”

Another traveller added: “Unmissable! And if you are in London, you can make a return trip the same day and still get to know Stonehenge. The town is old, of Roman architecture, beautiful, medieval, with stone houses.”

The study, by Sweepstakes Table ranked the top ten most walkable cities in the UK by looking at various factors. It analysed climate, walking distances to the city’s top five attractions, and pedestrian safety in coming up with the scores. While Bath came top with 99.04, Leeds came last with just 9.55. The team said it sourced climate data from Numbeo’s Quality of Life index, mapped walking routes using Google Maps from each city’s main train station to its top five TripAdvisor attractions, and reviewed pedestrian casualty statistics from the Department for Transport’s 2024 records. The final scores were calculated using weighted values, with walking distance and time given the most importance.
