SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead feels Thursday’s 14 point home victory over champions Ipswich was “a long time coming.”

The Tigers opened their ROWE Motor Oil Premiership account for the season with a 52-38 win over the Witches in their first home league fixture of the year.

Going into the contest, the Steel City side may have only managed one win in five in all competitions – but had clocked at least 41 points in each outing.

Stead was thrilled to see his team finally come away on the right side of the scoreline, and whilst there may have been knocks for Chris Holder and Jye Etheridge, he insists there are plenty of plus points for his riders to build on when they host newcomers Northampton this Thursday (May 14, 7.30pm).

“It was a result that has kind of felt like it’s been a long time coming,” Stead said.

“I’ve said it on a couple of occasions, whilst the results haven’t been with us, our overall performance levels have been good.

“I think had it not been for the home loss against Leicester, a lot more people would’ve seen it that way also and they’d have agreed it had been quite a solid little start with plenty to build on.

“Thursday we had a better contribution from down at reserve and that probably made the difference.

“But minus the spills for Chris and Jye, I think there were positives from all of the lads, particularly the way they managed to turn the screw in the second half of the meeting.”
