Two boxers from one of Bristol’s most deprived areas won the highest national accolade after being crowned the senior champions of England.

Yasin Saddiq and Dominic Owoo, who are amateur boxers from Barton Hill ABC, went to the England Boxing National Amateur Championships finals day in Derby, and came away winners and champions in their respective categories.

Dominic Owoo scored an impressive 5-0 victory over Rotherham-based fighter Carter Gooden in the under 85kg category.

Yasin Saddiq, fighter in the lighter under-57.5kg category, won a 4-1 victory over Sheffield fighter Mohammad Amin Kadivar.

Both have won championships and tournaments around Europe in recent years, but to be the amateur English champion is the ultimate honour for an amateur.

Coaches at Barton Hill Boxing Club said it was a ‘historic milestone’ for the club and their two fighters. The pair battled through pre-quarter finals in Banbury, and then quarter finals and semi finals in Rotherham earlier last month, before the finals day at the Derby Arena.

“This achievement is massive for us as a small boxing club. Yasin and Dominic delivered exceptional performances throughout the championships, securing national titles at the highest level of amateur boxing in England,” said a spokesperson for Barton Hill’s coaches Lee, Carlton and Hasan.

“Their success reflects years of discipline, consistency, and unwavering commitment to their craft.

“Yasin, who first stepped into the gym at just five years old, and Dominic, who began his journey at nine, have progressed through the Barton Hill system from grassroots level to the pinnacle of the national stage.

“Across the tournament, both boxers demonstrated outstanding technical ability, composure under pressure, and the mentality required to overcome the very best competitors in the country,” he added.

The achievement is all the more remarkable because Barton Hill ABC has undergone a turbulent last couple of years. The club was evicted from its former home at the old Dugout in Barton Hill and faced an uncertain future until City Academy school offered a permanent home.

“At Barton Hill ABC, these achievements are not attributed to chance,” said the coaches. “They are the result of long-term development, resilience, and the collective belief shared by athletes, their families, and the coaching team.

“We are immensely proud not only of the victories themselves, but of the professionalism, respect, and maturity both boxers displayed throughout the championships. They represented the club, the community, and the sport with distinction,” they added.

“For a small community club, this achievement carries enormous meaning. It stands as proof of what can be accomplished through hard work, strong guidance, and a supportive environment. We are incredibly proud of Yasin and Dominic and remain fully committed to supporting their continued progression in the sport,” they added.
