Pop star Dua Lipa (30) has sued the electronics company Samsung for damages amounting to 15 million dollars (just under 13 million euros). The legal dispute revolves around the use of a photo of the singer on the packaging of television sets. The industry magazine “Variety” published the lawsuit filed in California online. Dua Lipa accuses the company of using a photo of her taken backstage at a festival in 2024 for advertising purposes without her consent and without appropriate payment. Samsung did not initially respond to a dpa request for comment.
According to the statement of claim, the pop star had already asked the company to remove the image last year, but Samsung reacted “dismissively and indifferently” to her warning and continued to use it. In the legal document, Dua Lipa quotes, among other things, statements from customers who wrote on the X platform that the photo of the singer on the box had tempted them to buy the TV.
The Grammy award winner, known for songs such as “Houdini” and “Dance The Night”, claims that the company exploited her brand identity. In addition to the claim for damages of 15 million dollars, the singer is insisting that the use of the photo be stopped immediately.
