Owls feature on the Calverley family crest and now you can meet them in real life at this weekend’s open days at Calverley Old Hall.

Birds of prey experts SMJ Falconry will be bringing a selection of British and foreign owls for visitors to meet. There’s also the chance to take part in a free Collagraph printmaking activity in the Community Space, which continues the owl theme. Leeds artist Silka Guy will help visitors to make their own unique print using stencils, tape and water-based inks.

The hall itself, a Grade 1 listed building, was once so dilapidated it was on Historic England’s at risk register. But thanks the Heritage Lottery Fund and supporters, Landmark Trust, the owners, were able to renovate and transform it, uncovering unique artifacts, including a Tudor wall painting as they did.

Landmark Trust, a charity, buys and preserves historic properties, hiring them out at holiday lets. Open day visitors will be able to look around and see the transformation for themselves. Entry is free, though donations are appreciated.
